Living in the country has its drawbacks, but who would have guessed that anyone would have to pay a whopping £83,000 to get on the internet.
That’s what businesswoman Shona Meiklejohn has been told it cost her to get a broadband connection to her home on Loch Broom near Ullapool, according to the Press and Journal today.
But is gets worse. Apparently, BT say the reason it would cost so much is because there is a device in place to split a telephone line between her and another local property. However the owner of the other property has been trying to get BT to disconnect her.
It seems BT did back down though. They recalculated the cost to £80,500 and gave a £16,000 discount. So now her broadband will only cost her £64,500.
I wonder if you get a free router with that?
Meanwhile, we hear on Gizmodo that the crew of a lifeboat station facing a similar problem took the matter in their own hands. The resourceful lifesavers picked up a shovel, dug a trench and laid their own fiber optic cable!
