I love the web. I love the way it connects people whose paths might never cross.

About a month ago, I was pointed to a website via Twitter that stuck in my mind. It was Marmaduke Grimwig and Co, a marketing company creating ‘unique brand experiences’. At the time I remarked to myself that it was a clever piece of marketing and design, using a very original idea to sell a product in a marketplace which is fast becoming saturated.

Marmaduke had certainly done a good job on its own branding, evidenced by the fact that I revisited the site (in my mind) several times over after first seeing it.

Fast forward to this week and I got a phone call from a complete stranger, Giles Moffat. He had seen one of my pictures of a stunt cyclist on the web, and wanted to use it on his website. After a brief discussion about what it was all about, we agreed terms and I asked him to email details, which he did.

It is some time since Google stopped publishing how many websites it has indexed, but last time I looked it was in the billions.

So how weird that this stranger from the web was actually the man behind Marmaduke Grimwig and Co,

Now, I’m not a betting type, but I would say the chances of that happening are firmly in the bookies favour.

Giles and I exchanged emails about some video I shot at the same event, and we revelled in the mysterious unlikeliness of our sudden acquaintance.

And I can only hope that the designers of other inspirational web masterpieces will beat a track to my door in years to come.

But I’ll not put any bets on it.
