Moving domains around is part of what I do every day, well, probably not actually every day, but I do it regularly.
It’s an easy process, that the protection of a secure login is strong enough for. Big names like 123-reg, namesco, ukreg, etc, all make this a relatively easy process.
So occasionally, I get to move a domain name that is with a company that likes to do it differently.
Friday afternoon is my favourite time for a move, because if anything goes wrong, usually weekends have least impact in a business if email is affected, so I was calling Verio, because their online control panel didn’t allow this process, and after waiting 15 minutes to be connected, I was told I had to send in a written request!
Now, bear in mind that I had to give a username and a password just to be able to talk to someone, I was a bit surprised.
And it had to be actually written, or typed, on a piece of paper, signed, scanned and sent as an email attachment.
They gave me some flimsy excuse about how the domain name sex.com (and no, I’m not going to link to it!), apparently worth £3m, had been stolen by unauthorised entry to a control panel.
Well correct me if I’m wrong, but I would have thought it easier to fake a letter from a company, than it is to hack a domain registrar’s back end.
